In 1836 the Whigs ran two candidates against him, Wm Henry Harrison in the North and Hugh L White of Tennessee in the South. Additionally, the Whigs in Massachusetts nominated Daniel Webster, while SC ignored al of them and cast its electoral vore for Willie P Mangum.

In 1840 his only opponent was William Henry Harrison, who defeated him 234-60.
