A book was written about him a 100 years after his death and one of the stories in the book relates that when he was asked who chopped down the cherry tree he said " I can not tell a lie. I did" This was a made up story that has come down to us as fact.

The tale goes that the first President of the United States of America, George Washington, answered this when asked if he chopped down a cherry tree. Here in the USA, children are told this story from a very early age. I suppose to try and keep them from fibbing. I don't put much stock in it being a true story and kids here fib just like most kids.
