It is Glen Goldsmith - Dreaming. It got to number 9 in March 1988.
You may be thinking of Richie Havens. He sang it at Woodstock. You can see a clip of it at http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x50xpk_richie-havens-freedom_music. I saw him perform a free concert in Brooklyn in the 80's and he was mesmerizing.
Country Joe McDonald sang "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" at Woodstock, which is often referred to as the "One two three, what are we fighting for?" song at the festival.
