Many people were involved in the saving of Jamestown. John Smith and Lord De la Ware both made contributions by making the colonists stop looking for gold and start planting crops. They also made the rich tend the fields like the common man. They negotiated with the Indians and traded with them for supplies they needed like food. John Rolfe also introduced tobacco to the land as a cash crop and the profit, made by the tobacco, was enough to keep the funding for the colony coming,

Of the 400 people who were in Jamestown in 1607, there remained only 40 men in 1610. There was a rescue mission of ships sent from England that arrived in 1610. On the way to the rescue, the rescuers shipwrecked in a hurricane, on Bermuda. William Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, is based on this historical event. Some of the shipwrecked victims fixed up one of the ships so they could continue on to rescue Jamestown. As they sailed into the James River, they encountered a ship of the Jamestown survivors, who were going to try to return to England. The rescuers convinced them to stay. Interestingly, one of the rescuers was Stephen Hopkins, who returned to England a few years later, and then came back to America again, on the Mayflower! John Smith is credited with convincing the colonists to grow a cash crop of tobacco, which allowed Jamestown to continue to exist.
