He didn't "find America". In fact, he had no idea that it existed and how big the world really was. His maps were wrong, so he went west to go East. He never knew about North America and didn't realize how wrong he was in his calculations. The rest of Spain had no idea about Columbus and his fame came about years after his death. In fact, in his life he was considered a failure and died broke. His son sued the crown to fulfill the contract he made with him.

Columbus didn't come to "America" he got close, but didn't land here. He landed on Hispaniola an island near Cuba. He was looking for a trade route to Asia and had no idea that North America blocked his way. He got the funding for his voyage from the Spanish Crown who expected to get more back in gold and goods than they spent sending him. He came home with very little and no gold.
