David was a child (probably teenager) who kills Goliath with a stone from his slingshot. He later becomes the second king of Israel. David was about 14 years of age when he slew Goliath, the same year he was anointed King of Israel by Samuel, a judge and prophet in Israel. David was the Son of Jesse, and a shepherd boy who tended the flocks.
The most important event leading to King David's reign, was selecting the perfect water-worn stone for his sling, from the small steam in the valley, dividing the Philistine army from the Israelis... in order to obtain the perfect trajectory required, to impact said stone into the forehead of one (rather large) individual named Goliath. In successfully doing so, David had now caught the attention of his elders. It is all history after that event.
The phrase is used to describe a victory where the weaker or smaller party wins over the larger or more powerful opponent particularly when the victory is unexplainable in any other way than with divine guidance. George Bailey's business, Bailey Building and Loan, represented the small, community-focused and ethical approach to banking, whereas Mr. Potter's bank symbolized the ruthless, profit-driven and exploitative nature of big corporations. This contrast highlighted the struggle between the little guy (David) and the powerful elite (Goliath) in the film "It's a Wonderful Life."
In the Biblical story found in 1 Samuel 17, David a small boy kills a mighty giant of a warrior called Goliath. The army of Philistines prepared for battle against Israel and camped in the area between Socoh and Azekah. King Saul of Israel gathered his army and camped near the valley of Elah. For many days, Goliath, a giant among the Philistines challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to meet him in combat. David, a young shepherd boy, answered the challenge and went out to meet Goliath with a sling and a handful of stones. David defeats Goliath with a well-placed stone into Goliath's forehead. David cuts off Goliath's head with Goliath's own sword. The Philistines see their champion defeated and turn to run away. The Israelites chase down the Philistines killing many of them. Israel's army returns to plunder the deserted Philistine's camp.

David took 5 stones in case he missed with the first one. David had his staff, also, that he used proficiently as a shepherd. He had used it against bears and lions in the past [verses 34-35]. This club was a weapon used in-close. But lions and bears don't wield huge spears and swords that can kill from a distance... and David was no fool. David never would have gotten inside Goliath's spear, javelin and sword with his staff [club], even if he had gotten past Goliath's shield-bearer who went out in front of Goliath [verse 41]. So the five smooth stones merely meant that David was improving his odds against all the obstacles in his way. But the first small missile found its way, not THROUGH the spear, sword, javelin... and shield-bearer... but ABOVE THEM ALL. Given Goliath's towering height, David had a clear shot at Goliath's forehead with a small stone that he probably didn't see coming! Goliath only noticed David's shepherd's staff: "Am I a dog... that you come at me with a stick?..." (verse 43 NLT New Living Translation). And discounted his sling [if he even took notice of it in the first place]. All David wanted to do was stun Goliath and knock him down with the stones, so he could then quickly advance on Goliath while he was down at ground level and lop his head off with his own sword! [verses 50-51]
