That depends on about WHICH Christian "religion" is meant - True Christianity... or what passes for it, today.
The biblical meaning of "religion" [threskeia] is "ceremonial observance."
In the truest sense, God [Jesus Christ - the Creator God of the Old Testament - John 1:3 & 10] began the "Christian religion" after Adam and Eve sinned [transgressed God's Commandments - I John 3:4]... and He instituted the ceremonial observance of "animal sacrifice" that is recorded to have been administered [through faith] by Abel (Gen.4:3-4). The "ceremonial observance of the shedding of blood" has always pointed to Christ.
"...and without shedding of blood is no remission." (Heb.9:22)
"By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God [Jesus Christ, man's Creator] testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh." (Heb.11:4)
In the sense of what passes for the "modern professing Christian religion" today... it began when unconverted, carnal minded men, posing and professing Jesus' name [when He never knew them - Matt.7:22-23], took it upon themselves to "explain the inspired Word of God their way"... and enticed denominational splinter groups of like-minded folks to follow them and join their "clubs" and "associations."
"...Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ [either professing to BE Christ; or professing that Jesus IS the Christ]; and shall deceive many." (Matt.24:4-5)
These carnal minded men, influenced by centuries of satanic pagan obesrvances and thousands of gods... introduced them into their brands of "Christian religion"... and renamed it "Christianity"... with each one in turn professing to possess the "real genuine Jesus."
Ancient pagan rites and "ceremonial observances" that are not commanded by God in His Word were instituted and accepted by deceived men in Jesus' name, because they weren't required to change anything in their behavior... weren't required to "prove" anything about what they were being told... but to just "believe." All they had to do, mainly, was memorize the new Christian names given to the old gods and goddesses [like Ishtar - Easter].
That's roughly the starting points of the two "Christian religions."
Jesus started the real one after man sinned, failed to "obey His voice"... and chose "another god before Him."
The natural carnal minds of men altered the religion in the course of time into what it is today, because: "...the carnal mind is enmity [hostile] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." (Rom.8:7)
True Christianity is knowing and understanding the wisdom of God, which the carnal mind cannot fathom unless God opens the heart to it.
The True Christian religion is "loving God with everything you have" and "loving your fellowman as much as you love yourself" [the summation of the Ten Commandments - Matt.22:37-40].
And understanding that human nature is deceptively and abysmally selfish... very few people in the world are capable of loving others as much as they love themselves. Or aware that they are supposed to.
So, God started the True Christian religious ceremonial observances - the gruesome "shedding of the blood of animals" that pointed to a future time when He would shed His own Divine blood... to purchase His creation from their bondage to the god they chose in the beginning.
Through this gruesome "religious" ceremonial observance... He allowed Himself to be shredded into hamburger and brutally murdered... to reveal to His creation what TRUE RELIGION is:
UNSELFISH LOVE for our Creator... and for one another. A truly rare commodity in this world.
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." (James 1:27)
Jesus Christ pioneered [UNSELFISH LOVE]... the True Christian religion.
Satan-worshiping men, by their very nature, perverted it into the pagan "religion" that men "ceremonially and erroneously observe" today.
