Best Answer

It was a Greek city-state which expanded through trade, and then by establishing an empire which it drew on to provide a prosperous lifestyle. It became a centre of culture, but over-reached itself in trying to dominate the Greek world, lost a long and devastating war, and became a second-rate power.
