Who was Deng Xiaoping?
Deng Xiaoping became China's powerful leader in 1977. At the time he was 72 years old . China was a very poor country. Deng decided that free enterprise would help China's economy . Most Communist were against free enterprise. But Deng wanted to help China's economy. He allowed farmers and business owners to make profits. Many new factories were started. Deng allowed the United States and other countries to have more trade with China. China's economy grow stronger. Deng did not believe in democracy. He sent the Chinese Army to attack the student protesters at Tiananmen Square. Deng died when he was 92 years old. He had helped China become a more modern nation.
Mao Zedong jailed Deng Xiaoping in fear of him attempting to overthrow Mao's dictatorship. Deng Xiaoping's views were different that Mao, he wanted China to be expanded and open to the world, something Mao Zedong opposed. Deng Xiaoping became the leader of the People's republic of China in 1978 and has changed China's market economy, something Mao Zedong probably opposed too.
