You may refer to Karl Beethoven who was Ludwig van Beethoven's younger brother, or Karl Beethoven who was Karl's son. Karl's son, Karl (Jr.), attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head but survived. Afterwards, Ludwig allowed Karl (Jr.) to decide his own occupation (Ludwig insisted on Composer, while Karl Jr wanted to be a soldier) but still restricted him from associating with his mother.

Karl Van Beethoven was Ludwig van Beethoven's nephew - son of his brother Kasper. Beethoven became Karl's legal guardian when Kasper died - although his mother was still alive, Kasper was forced to leave her and go to live with Beethoven. There was great animosity between Beethoven and his sister in law and Karl was torn between the two. There is some suggestion that Karl was actually Ludwig's son, which is why Beethoven was so insistent on becoming his guardian (and bullying his brother into signing the papers when he was dying). Interesting story and worth some research.

Ludwig van Beethoven's date of birth is listed as 16 December 1770.

Whether or not he was actually born on that day is unknown. Beethoven was baptised on 17 December 1770. It was the custom of the time to baptise children the day after they were born, and only his official baptism records exist. thus it is assumed he was born on 16 December 1770. While the exact date is unknown due to lack of records, Beethoven was baptised on the 17th December 1770. It is believed his birthday was on the 16th, as it was common for babies to be baptised the day after they were born.

It is said that Beethoven himself celebrated his birthday on 16 December.
I know that it was a long time ago.

Ludwig van Beethoven was a famous composer spanning the Classical-Romantic periods. Born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770, Beethoven's talent was recognised when he was very young. His "Early" composing career was heavily influenced by Haydn, his teacher, and Mozart, whose style he admired and who had given him his first lesson in composition. His first and second symphonies, the first six string quartets, the first two piano concertos, and the first twenty piano sonatas, including the Pathétique and Moonlight, were written in this period. When Beethoven began to go deaf, it marked the beginning of his "Middle" period of composing. The music he wrote during this time tended towards large-scale works expressing heroism and struggle, and included six symphonies, beginning with the "Eroica", and including the rich Fifth Symphony. Other works include the last three piano concertos and his only violin concerto, five string quartets (Nos. 7 - 11), many piano sonatas, including the Waldstein and Appassionata, and his only Opera, Fidelio.

The "Late" period of Beethoven's career covered the final eleven years of his life, and his compositions were highly passionate, expressive and intense. Among the works of this period are the Ninth Symphony, the "Choral", the Missa Solemnis, the last six string quartets and the last five piano sonatas.
