Famous for is a rather poor way of working it, but he is accredited for:

1) being president during the only time the nation actually experienced a surplus in federal treasury. The extra money was given to the states to spend as they pleased; which for the most part, was spent fast and poorly.

2) being president during the Panic of 1837, which was a five year depression (the worst that the country had yet to see).

3) being the first president to run against the Whig party, which he won against in the election of 1836.
