Saint John Fisher was an English Catholic bishop and theologian who was executed during the reign of King Henry VIII. He was a staunch defender of the Catholic Church and refused to acknowledge the King as the head of the Church of England. Fisher was made a cardinal by Pope Paul III in recognition of his martyrdom.
He was canonised in the RC Church because he was martyred for speaking against Henry VIII and his reformation, yet he was also beatified and made a saint in the Church of England, most probably because he was a religious scolar and important bishop in England before the reformation.
