Julius Caesar was probably one of the best generals in history, but an ill fated and stuborn politician. Augustus was just the opposite. He did not posses much general skills having his close friends and able generals win battles for him, like Agrippa at the battle of Actium. However he was one of the most able and skilled politicians and reformators in history.

∙ 13y agoThe answer to your question calls for an opinion, and I can only give mine. Julius was a better military leader and strategist He had ideas for innovations but only lived long enough to carry out a few of them. He liked to act and get things done quickly and was criticized for even dictating letters while he was supposed to be officiating at the public festivals. Augustus, on the other hand, had very little military ability, but was by far the better politician. A favorite saying of his was "make haste slowly". In other words, he was wise enough to think things through and to ease the empire into the principate with only minor opposition. He had the sense to know his own shortcomings and to surround himself with people who could fill in the gaps in his abilities.
