Although many people were abducted by the SLA, the most famous abduction was Patricia Hearst, who was abducted in 1974. She was abducted by the SLA because she was the granddaughter of a wealthy publisher. The SLA demanded that a large sum of money be distributed to the local poor. The Hearst family did so and received a picture of Patricia with a machine gun and a note saying she was now fighting for the SLA. Patricia was found and arrested years later. It was reported that she had been brainwashed and served 7 years in federal prison.
