A committee of five members, including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert LIVINGSTON, John Adams, and Roger Sherman, had been appointed to prepare a declaration explaining the resolution. and Jefferson was assigned to write a draft of the declaration. With a few minor changes by Adams and Franklin, the draft was debated and adopted on July 4, 1776.

The five men from the Constitutional Convention who were delegated as a committee to write it the Declaration of Independence were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman. Once Jefferson finished the document, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin made some small changes. Livingston and Sherman are not believed to have any input in the first draft.
