James Earl Ray pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later recanted his guilty plea. Not everyone, including King's family, believed Ray was actually responsible for the assassination, believing instead that entities within the United States govenment were involved and Ray was a scapegoat. Some documents from the investigation are not to be released until 2027.
