William Henry Harrison won over Martin Van Buren in 1840 with 234 electoral votes to 60 for VanBuren. 148 votes were needed to win. Harrison won in NY (42 votes),PA (30), Ohio(21),KY(15),NC(15),TN (15)and Mass(14)which gave him 152 votes, so you might say the people in these states elected him President. He also won 11 votes from GA, so he really did not need Mass.

The states he lost were VA(23),Alabama(7),SC(11),IL(5), MO(4),AR(3) and NH(7), so everybody not in these states deserves some credit for electing Harrison.
