He was succeeded by Andrew Johnson of Tennessee (Republican).
The first President elected after the Cvil War was Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) in November 1868.

∙ 10y agoThe end date of the US Civil War is important as once hostilities ended, certain laws pertaining to the United States based on the US Civil War changed the political scenery.
US General Sherman was negotiating the surrender of Confederate General Johnston's forces. This was happening before and after Lincoln's assassination. The New US President, Andrew Johnson, disapproved of Sherman's offer and insisted on the same terms that Confederate General Lee had surrendered under. Thus it can be seen that Andrew Johnson was the first president after the end of the US Civil War.
