Grover Cleveland was the President of the United States at the start of 1897. He was replaced by William McKinley on March 4.

Grover Cleveland (born March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey; died June 24, 1908 in Princeton, New Jersey) succeeded Benjamin Harrison as the twenty-fourth President of the United States, serving between March 4, 1893 and March 4, 1897, becoming the only individual to serve as President in two non-consecutive terms.

Following Grover Cleveland's exit from office, William McKinley (born January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio; died September 14, 1901 in Buffalo, New York) became the twenty-fifth President of the United States, serving between March 4, 1897 and his assassination on September 14, 1901.

This depends on the country/organization. See related questions.

US: Grover Cleveland until March 4, replaced by William McKinley.

Grover Cleveland was the 22nd President of the United States from 1885 March 4 to 1889 March 4 and the 24th President of the United States from 1893 March 4 to 1897 March 4. Despite winning the popular vote in the 1888 election, he would ultimately lose the presidency, only to regain it in the 1892 re-election.

William Mckinley was the 25th President of the United States from 1897 March 4 until 1901 September 14, when he eventually died after being shot on September 6 by an assassin.
