The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed in 1949. It forms a collective defense and its member states agree to a combined effort in response to any threat. Original members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The First Nato Secretary General, Lord Ismay, described the NATO goal as "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."

NATO and the Warsaw Pact were two completely different organisations.

NATO was founded in 1949 by Western nations, such as Britain, Canada and America, along with the majority of non-Communist Europe.

The Warsaw Pact was the Soviet response in 1955, involving the USSR and it's puppet states to the West, including Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
