When the missionaries came to the building grounds of Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, they asked an Esselen(Coastoanean) Indian how the place was like, and the Native American said a word like the word "soledad." When they came there, they saw that the American Indian was right and put "soledad" into the name.
