It was named after the Catholic Our Lady of Soltude. When the missionaries came to the building grounds of Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, they asked an Esselen(Coastoanean) Indian how the place was like, and the Native American said a word like the word "soledad." When they came there, they saw that the American Indian was right and put "soledad" into the name.
