No, Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 - June 22, 1969) was not the first choice for the role of Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, MGM first considered child actress Shirley Temple (b. April 23, 1928). In fact, the studio went so far as to arrange an exchange of their star acting talents Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 - November 16, 1960) and Jean Harlowe (March 3, 1911 - June 7, 1937) for Shirley, who was under contract with Twentieth-Century Fox. But the contract fell through with Jean's untimely death.

That the contracted arrangements between two studios could not be carried out is the reason why the original choice for playing Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" had to be replaced.

Specifically, the original choice was Shirley Temple (b. April 23, 1928). Twentieth Century Fox had arranged to trade her for MGM contracted actors Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 - November 16, 1960) and Jean Harlow (March 3, 1911 - June 7, 1937). But the contract fell through because of the death of Jean Harlow before filming began in 1938-1939.
