Pericles is regarded as the most successful and accomplished statesman of Ancient Greece. He was a general of Athens during its Golden Age, in the time in between the Persian and Peloponnesian wars. He is also remembered as an exceptional orator.
Pericles became the leader of the democratic party and the ruler of the city. He continued Athens' expansionist policy by trying to increase the number of allied cities, establishing new Athenian colonies (settlements) and suppressing revolts against Athens. He was involved in the First Peloponnesian was between Athens and Sparta which ended with the Thirty Years' Peace. He also led Athens in the Peloponnesian war until his death after the first 2 1/2 years of the war.
Pericles was a great military leader and statesman. After his death there was political instability in Athens as the city lost a leader who was able to keep it united. The Peloponnesian war ended with a truce, but started again and Athens lost.
Under Pericles the Athenian empire reached the greatest extent and power it ever had, and the city reached the greatest height it ever experienced. Pericles' patronage of art and literature turned Athens into the chief cultural centre of the Greek world.
