What was the pope's role in Vatican II?

.Catholic AnswerThe only voting members of any Ecumenical Council are the Bishops of the Catholic Church. Invited and attending the Second Vatican Council were any number of observers, primarily periti (experts in various fields, the current pope, Benedict XVI, served as a periti during the Second Vatican Council), also there were outsiders invited to observe such as representatives from various protestant groups. .from Wikipedia:Attendance varied in later sessions from 2,100 to over 2,300. In addition, a varying number of periti (Latin: "experts") were available for theological consultation-a group that turned out to have a major influence as the council went forward. Seventeen Orthodox Churches and Protestant denominations sent observers. More than three dozen representatives of other Christian communities were present at the opening session, and the number grew to nearly 100 by the end of the 4th Council Sessions.

What was 1 of the many changes that Pope John XX III made?

What was the problem at Vatican 1?

The problem that had been building and that Pope Pius IX had dealt with for many years, and the reason he called the First Vatican Council was the heresy of modernism. Pope Pius IX considered that a solemn proclamation of the dogma of papal infallibility to be essential to end his two decade battle with modernism. The Council did, indeed, vote overwhelming in favor of papal infallibility, but this did not end the modernist heresy. Pope Pius IX successors all had to deal with it, and we are still dealing with the fallout from it in the 21st century. Thus the Council's most famous degree was on papal infallibility, the Council had to rapidly disband due to advancing Italian armies and it was not officially ended until 1962.

Similarities between First Vatican Council and Second Vatican Council?

Anther answer from our community:.The main difference between the Second Vatican Council and the twenty ecumenical councils that preceded it is the the first twenty councils were always primarily concerned with doctrinal concerns and with pastoral concerns secondarily. I believe all of the previous councils had been called to deal with particular heresies that had arisen, from the First Council of Nicaea which dealt with Arianism to the Council of Trent with dealt with protestantism, I'm not sure about the First Vatican Council. The Second Vatican Council, however, dealt with no doctrinal issues whatsoever and was not called because of any problems with heresies but was primarily a pastoral council. Blessed Pope John XXIII called the Council to deal with updating or making the Church more sensitive to the issues in the modern world. Unlike the previous Councils which settled heresies, the Church had to deal with a number of heresies that arose after the Council.

They, however, brought with them a number of theological experts, the current Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, was one of these experts at the Vatican Council. Also invited were various observers from other religions, including our separated brethren in the East, and protestants, who attended as observers, which was quite a break with earlier Councils, although the Lutherans were invited to the Council of Trent in the 16th century, they refused to attend.

What city did NOT have its own pope during the years of the Great Schism?

.Catholic AnswerNo city ever has "its own pope". The pope has always been in Rome. During the Great Schism, there was a French anti-pope who was in Avignon, France, and near the end of the Great Schism, there was an Italian anti-pope in Pisa. So for your multiple choice question, any city outside of the Vatican and Rome did not have a Pope, and any city outside of Avignon and Pisa didn't even have a claimant to the Chair of Peter.

Was the Vatican where they decided that Benedict was going to be the new pope?

The Vatican is the place where the Worlds Cardinals meet to make the decision. The Cardinals pray and discuss all the candidates and each day they vote. At the end of each day when the voting is complete, if there is no positive decision on the new pope, the voting ballots are burned and the smoke that rises tells the world if a decision has been made. Black smoke, no decision, white smoke and we have a new pope. This process goes on for days and could go on for weeks until a decision is made. This is an important decision for Catholics and really for all christians as the Pope is the next successor to Saint Peter (the rock) who was the first Pope.
