The first Independence Day was celebrated on July 4, 1776, and the President of the United States during that time was John Adams. However, it is important to note that Adams did not become president until 1789, when the United States adopted the Constitution and established the office of the president. Prior to that, the country was led by the Continental Congress.
There were no Presidents in the American Colonies then. Independence Day is what is sounds like- the day that independence from Britain was declared.
