Abdoulaye Wade is leader of Sengalese Democratic Party (PDS) and has been since its founding in 1974. He ran for presidency multiple times since 1978, and finally won in 2000. Wade became the third President of Senegal on 2000 April 1 and was re-elected in 2007. In 2001, a new constitution was enacted which shortens the length of presidential terms to 5 years. In 2012, he ran for re-election, placing first in the first round, but he was defeated by Macky Sall in the run-off election 66% to 34%.
