There was none. The country was just declaring itself as an entity separate from England and was establishing the very process that would eventually result in the election of the first president, George Washington.

The office of US President was established by the Constitution; there was no President until the Articles were ratified and the Constitution became operational. President Washington officially assumed office on April 30, 1789.

George Washington presided over the Philadelphia Convention while the Constitution was being written, and had been the Commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, so he was considered the primary leader of the Union before 1789. No one was President before that time.

Many people were involved in writing the U.S. Constitution, including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Thomas Paine. At the time it was written, there was no President of the United States. George Washington was sworn into office on April 30, 1789, nearly a year after the Constitution was ratified.

The US Constitution was ratified by the ninth state on June 21, 1788 and elections were scheduled for the President and Congress. George Washington was sworn in as the first President on April 30, 1789 and remained in office until March 4,1793. On May 29,1790, Rhode Island became the last of the 13 colonies to join the union.
