Wendell Willkie, a relatively unknown businessman from Indiana. Willkie was a fairly moderate Republican on most issues, and criticized Roosevelt for failing to end the Depression. The impeding World War II was another big issue. Although not a hardline isolationist like some Republicans, Willkie believed Roosevelt was eager to participate in the conflcit. Roosevelt had lost some of his popularity since the Court Packing Plan issue in 1937 and his decision to break with tradition and seek a third term was controversial.

However, with the combined support of traditional Democrats in the South, big cities and unions in the North and minority groups, Roosevelt's reelection was assured. Willkie conducted an energetic campaign and revived some Republican support in the Northwest and Northeast, carrying Iowa, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Michigan and his home state of Indiana. He also carried Maine and Vermont, the only states to oppose Roosevelt in the previous election. Roosevelt won 54.7% of the vote and took the electoral college by a landslide.
