When the United States was subduing the nations of the Southeast, members of various tribes who wished to continue resistence formed the Seminole nation. Originally it was more of a confederation (the members spoke different languages) but time and common cause welded it into a single nation. Technically, the Seminoles are still at war with the United States.
Originally the group of people which became known as the Seminole tribe was comprised of mostly Creeks from southern Alabama and Georgia. There were a significant number of runaway negro slaves, and even a few Cherokee. All of these groups had in common that they were refugees from various hardships and they came into what is now the state of Florida seeking safe-haven. Before 1819 Florida was in no way part of the U.S. so it was indeed, for the most part a safe-haven. In 1821 Florida became a U.S. territory and over the next 40 years or so life for the Seminoles became progressively worse as the U.S. wanted to make Florida suitable(or safe) for settlement which meant that the Seminoles had to be removed. The ones who were removed were sent to what is now Oklahoma.
