Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish mythologist. The original story ended tragically. Mr. Andersen showed some sparks of science-fiction by stating A. the mermaids have a natural life span of 300 years- three times the human maximum, but then dissolve into the water -thus avoiding any body being found by seamen, or fossils- a neat explanation that could have been used by Serling or the up-in-smoke aliens of many Twilight zone types.

Hans Christian Anderson. His tale is a tragedy and in a sense a sermon-tale against race-mixing.
