∙ 12y agoThe building of the Berlin Wall was ordered by Walter Ulbricht, leader of the East German communist SED party (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands - Socialist Unity Party of Germany to prevent a "brain drain" of young East Germans.
Between 1945 and the time the wall was built, approximately 3.5 million people escaped from East Germany into West Germany, including many Poles and Czechs.

∙ 9y agoSoviet leader Nikita Khruschev recommended to East Germany to build the Berlin Wall to close off access between east and west Germany. Some East Germans were dissatisfied with life under the communist system, and West Berlin offered what they were looking for. By August 1961, an average of 2,000 East Germans were crossing into the West every day. East Germany was losing skilled laborers, professionals, and intellectuals. This was having a devastating effect on the East German economy.
