German military dictators in World War 1From 1916 till early October 1918, Ludendorff and Hindenburg exercised near-dictatorial powers in Germany. When it became obvious that Germany was going to lose the war these two men pushed civilians into office and faded into the background. They made the new civilian government sign the armistice and then labelled them traitors. They really were a squalid pair.

There were actually many dictators who emerged in the period between 1918 and 1945. Here's a quick list, and I'm sure there are more that I'm missing:

  1. Benito Mussolini in Italy (1922)
  2. Chiang Kai-Shek in China (1925)
  3. Josef Stalin in the Soviet Union (mid-1920's)
  4. Jozef Pilsudski in Poland (1926)
  5. Engelbert Dollfuss in Austria (1932)
  6. Antonio Salazar in Portugal (1932)
  7. Adolf Hitler in Germany (1933)
  8. Anastasio Somoza in Nicaragua (1936)
  9. Francisco Franco in Spain (1939)
  10. Ion Antonescu in Romania (1940)
  11. Ferenc Salazi in Hungary (1944)

There were also some monarchs who had governments that functioned a lot like dictatorships during this period, such as Emperor Hirohito of Japan, Regent Miklos Horthy of Hungary, and King Carol II of Romania.
