It is reasonably known that two Russian women died in space-related accidents prior to l962, the official Thereskova flight was made in l963. Mme Tereshkova is still alive, one adds. they were two different types of space accidents- the first one, in l96l was a solitary craft and its female occupant was killed when the heat shielding apparatus failed. There was a grim cycle of screams followed by dead silence. The Soviet Union has never commented on this one which may have involved an ( X-plane) rather than a true space craft such as the Mercury or Gemini Capsule. A second Soviet space tragedy occured in February of l96l and was written up by UFO fans- it is mentioned in several books on UFO"s. in this one a Co-ed capsule was launched from the Baikonur proving grounds- with a Male and Female cosmonaut in the same capsule. They had encountered some minor technical problems but the life support ( in orbital phase here) was somehow disabled as the batteries were running down- Both crew members sighted a UFO and got on the radio to Moscow. There was much excitement in dialogue- and it is implied the doomed space couple may have died holding hands while the UFO disabled their life support-which may have given out naturally- this was in higher orbit, not a reentry mishap like accident one. Prior to the Challenger accident, the US would not admit to any Female casualties in the space program.
