William the conqueror was the King in 1066 but he had to fight for his crown with Harold Godwinson, in The Battle of Hastings. But the people of England hated William so he killed over 10,000 people. x

Edward was first, then he died. His cousin Haroldclaimed the throne. However a closer heir was William ,son of Robert I of Normandy. William invaded England and won the throne in 1066.

The first was Edward the Confessor who died on 5th of January 1066, then King Harold became King until he was beaten by William I (William the Conquerer) in October of the same year.
So I suppose the first King in that year was Edward the Confessor by 5 days.
