The first person to appear on US currency was the allegorical representation of Liberty, who appeared on coins from 1792 until 1945 when she last appeared on the Mercury dime. Abraham Lincoln was the first real person to appear on regular US coinage, when the first Lincoln cents issued in 1909.

The first person to appear on a US coin, however, was on a commemorative quarter, in 1893; it was Queen Isabella I of Spain. In 1900, the first representations of real men appeared, Washington and Lafayette on a commemorative dollar.

The first paper currency issued by the United States Treasury Department was issued in 1861. This money is called "demand notes," and was issued in denominations of five, ten, and twenty dollars. The five dollar note has a picture of Alexander Hamilton and a picture of the statue of Columbia on the Capitol Building, the ten dollar note has a portrait of Abraham Lincoln and an allegorical female representation of Art. The twenty dollar note had only a picture of Liberty.

The first (and only?) actual woman to appear on US paper money was Martha Washington, who was on a couple different types of dollar bills.

The Sioux Chief Onepapa once appeared on a five dollar bill. It was a handsome portrait, though he was given a Pawnee headdress to for artistic reasons.
