No one knows. The area around the mouth of the Hudson River has been visited since about 12,000 B.C. The person normally given credit for "discovering" the Hudson River, and the first European to chart the area, was Dutch navigator Henry Hudson. The Dutch colony on the southern tip of Manhattan which became New York was founded by Peter Stuyvesant in 1624 as New Amsterdam.
