The Methodist Church began as the 'Holy Club' - a small group of Christians who met in Oxford, England, in the 1700s that were disillusioned with the Church of England. There were around 25 in number. the most prominent being George Whitecliffe, Charles Wesley the hymn writer, and, the leader, Charles' brother, John Wesley. John Wesley was the most prominent of the group, who had immense energy travelling around England preaching from horseback. Estimates suggest that he preached to over 400,000 people and travelled 250,000 miles. Because John and Charles' (and the other members of the Holy Club) worship was logical and methodical, they became known as Methodists. Part of John's mission was to establish 'Methodist Societies' across the country, which grew, spread and eventually formed a new denomination called Methodism. However, despite John Wesley being the principal founder of Methodism, he remained an Anglican minister all his life.

The Methodist Church was founded by John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and George Whitefield. They were teased for being so "methodical" in their Bible studies, which is what gave the church the name "Methodist".
