The captain of the First Fleet was Captain Arthur Phillip. In October 1786, Phillip was appointed Governor-designate of the proposed British penal colony of New South Wales, arriving with the First Fleet on 26 January 1788. Second in command was Captain John Hunter. Each of the eleven ships had its own skipper, or captain, but Phillip was commander of the entire Fleet.
Captain Arthur Phillip was the first governor of New South Wales, the first official colony in Australia. He was actually appointed Governor-designate of the proposed British penal colony of New South Wales in October 1786, but his duties as Governor commenced upon the arrival of the First Fleet in January 1788.
