I favor Winston Churchill considering his awareness of what was happening and how he felt issues needed to be addressed during WWII

Alexander the great; Hannibal; Napoleon; Marlborough; Frederick the Great; Gustavus Adolphus; Wellington; Grant; Julius Caesar; Lee; King Henry V; Ghengis Khan; All & others have claims, but the first 5 would be on most peoples list.

1. Charles Martel:He won the historic battle of Tours in 10 October 732 against the Berbers, therefore saving the world and Christianity for Muslim (Berber) rule. He was also the grand father of Charles the great (Charlemagne)

2. St. Joan Of Arc: She had visions in which she saw saints and saved France from the English

3. Alexander The Great: He conquered one of the biggest empire in a short time ( The Roman Empires took years to flourish)

4. Constantine I: He was the first Christian ruler of the Roman empire. Although he ruled only the Eastern Roman Empire he conquered the Western Roman Empire too.He made Christianity the official religion of The Roman Empire, therefore allowing it to flourish.

5. Napoleon Bonaparte: The ended the first republic in France and changed the way battles were fought.

6. King Richard Coeur De Lion (The I): He was a great warrior and defeated Saladin and made peace with him (Because he did not reach Jerusalem)

7. Charlemagne: He was the grandson of the great Charles Martel, he ruled over the biggest empire in Europe since Roman times and was the first emperor to get the title of Holy Roman Emperor

8. Frederick Babarossa: He founded the holy Roman Empire , united the German lands and waged war against the pope in Roma ending in the Peace of Venice, He also joint the third crusade but was drowned in the river Saleph

There are many more great people, who were great leaders, However their list is very big and it will take more than a lifetime to right about them

In terms of a purely military leader, it would be almost impossible to top Subutai, the general who lead the Mongol Hordes for both Genghis and Ogedei Khan. In an age before any technology allowed for fast long-distance communications, he commanded the vast majority of the Mongol conquests, coordinating far-flung armies with ease. He directly commanded armies in over 65 battles, and virtually never lost - indeed, the vast majority of his battles were major victories, resulting in complete destruction of his opponent. Historically speaking, the Mongol Hordes of that time are considered by far to be the most dominant ground force in human history, and a great deal of that success was due to Subutai's generalship.

Compared to any of the above, Subutai won a substantially larger number of battles, did so in a significantly more dominant way, commanded a much larger number of soldiers covering a vastly larger area of operations, and all with technology that effectively boiled down to lightly armored bowmen on unarmored horses. He also consistently fought (and beat) opponents who either noticeably outnumbered him, or appeared (on paper) to be technologically more advanced.

Of the generals I know: (All of them changed warfare in a way or gained ridiculous amounts of land.

1. Alexander: Known for theatric tactics that were not only great but motivated his troops and conquered everything from Greece to India.

2. Ghengis Khan: Using barbaric, but effective tactics, he was able to take on the Chinese Empire and extend it to the 2nd biggest in the world on his own. The British empire wasn't made by 1 man unlike this one. The empire was short but we are talking generals not emperors.

3. Napoleon Bonaparte: Almost conquered Great Britain mainland and never lost a battle unless he was heavily outnumbered. Everyone knows him.

4. Sun Tsu: Although he is not famous for conquests and the fact that he might not have existed is made up for by the fact that he wrote the Art of War. Yeah...

6. Hannibal Something: Known as the guy that ALMOST defeated the Roman Republic.

5. Many Generals of the Americas: Including G.W., many generals fought against great empire like Spain, France, Britain and Portugal for freedom. Great ideals and should be remembered but you don't hear about them a lot.

_______________________________________________________________ Alexander the Great (#2 in area conquered but the lands he annexed were high quality.)

Genghis Khan (#1 in area conquered but much of what he annexed was wilderness)

Julius Caesar (best known is all)

Patton (recent and local is all)

Hannibal (a great general but he ended up in utter defeat, committed suicide finally)

Quintus Sertorius

Khalid ibn al-Walid (the most area in the shortest time, ended up demoted and dismissed)

1. Charles Martel:He won the historic battle of Tours in 10 October 732 against the Berbers, therefore saving the world and Christianity for Muslim(Berber) rule.......He was also the grand father of Charles the great(Charlemagne)

3.Julius Caesar-- Tactical Genius! He was loved by his troops for his valor and ability in combat as well as on tactical planning

He cannot beat Alexander! Alexander had a ridiculously smaller army as in in a single battle, with his entire armie, facing only a fraction of the Persian empire, he was outmatched 5-1. Alexander's ability to not loose a single battle much less the damn war unlike Lee makes him better. Did Lee even influence warfare in any way? Exactly. A great personality and strength? I'm sorry but All generals have that. It might as well be in the great general job description.

1. Hannibal Barca-- Decimated Roman Legions again and again. No one could defeat him, ultimatly, by passing up his one chance to destroy Rome, he passed up his chance for the undisputed title.

During the war, many men had entered the military, and the shortage of workers meant women were offered jobs they previously would not have been- mechanics, welders, airplane builders.
