Pius IX
The Papal States ceased to exist during the reign of Pope Pius IX in the 19th century. Today only the small country of Vatican City remains and it is totally surrounded by Rome and the country of Italy.
The chief sources of political instability were the Hundred Years' War, the Black Death, and the Papal Schism.
The Papal States
Vatican City did not exist as an entity until 1929 with the signing of the Lateran treaty. Before that, the Vatican was merely a neighborhood in Rome where much of the Catholic Church was located. All of central Italy, including Rome, were included in the Papal States.
The Papacy did not exist in the 5th Century BCE. Nor did Christianity in any form - you are six centuries too early.
