Some believe that they were called "Yankees" as a corrupted form of the Iroquoian (Native American) "Yengese." However, though the first American patriots came from the Boston area, and greater Massachusetts area, they were not known as "the Red Sox," as apropos, and more noble as that name may in fact be, when compared to that slang, Indian name.
