There were several kingdoms in Ireland which shifted territory over time. The 5 traditional kingdoms were ulster, leinster, connaught, munster and meath and monarchy was not a strictly herditary affair. Quite often an elected position and not the authoritarian political office you would normally associate with the word 'king'. The Irish kings lasted until the Henry VIII declared himself king of Ireland.
