a Chinese dued
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek
During World War 2, there were two main armies of two different political parties fighting Japanese in China, but nominally one army called National Revolutionary Army (of Republic of China).
The official government of China before 1949 was of KMT. So nominally the highest leader was Chiang. But the main part fighting Japanese in China was under the command of Mao Zedong, so the most significant guerrilla warfare was commanded by Mao and CCP.
There were many different communist factions, each with different leaders and mostly at odds with each other. Mao Tse Tung of course was the one who came out on top and became leader of China after the war.
China did not actually have a real solid leader of China during World war 2. The China we know of today was not the China of the war era. It consisted of many regions that were not totally united and ruled under one government with one leader. There were two factions: One led by the rising communist leader Mao Zedong and another leader opposed to communism and the Japanese by the name of Chiang Kai-shek. The US dealt with Chiang Kai-shek during World War 2 though he was not favored by the US Government. See related links below about the Chinese leaders during World War 2.
Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of China during World War Two. He came after Sun Yat-sen and before Mao Zedong.
