In July 1943, King Victor Emmanuel asked Mussolini to resign and had him put under house arrest. He appointed Marshal Pietro Badoglio, 1st Duke of Addis Abeba, as the Prime Minister of Italy. The Badoglio government officially declared war on Germany on October 13, 1943. In 1944, Ivanoe Bonomi was appointed Prime Minister and he was later replaced by Ferruccio Parri. After the war ended, there was a period of turmoil as Italy tried to establish a new government. After the war, Alcide De Gasperi was elected as Prime Minisiter and served 8 consecutive terms from 1945 to 1953.
