Four people have been nominated as U. S. presidential candidates after losing a vice presidential election, but Franklin D. Roosevelt is the only one of them who won. After losing the vice presidential election of 1920, he won the presidential elections of 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944.

The three who did not win were Rufus King, who was the Federalist Party nominee for president in 1816 and who lost the first two vice presidential elections, in 1804 and 1808, former Vice President Walter Mondale, who was the Democratic nominee for president in 1984 and who lost the 1980 vice presidential election, and Bob Dole, who was the Republican nominee for president in 1996 and who lost the 1976 vice presidential election (to Walter Mondale).
