The first and only president to be sworn in by a woman was the 36th president, Lyndon B. Johnson. The task of swearing in a president is usually done by the Chief Justice of the United States. However, following President John F. Kennedy's assassination in Dallas in 1963, there was an immediate need for a federal judge to administer the oath of office to Vice President Johnson who was also in Dallas. Federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes of the Northern District of Texas was called upon to administer the oath. This was done aboard Air Force One while it was parked on the ramp at Dallas Love Field.
