Starting with Abigail Adams in 1800, virtually all of presidents who had wives, had wives that improved the White House, or at least shaped it more into their tastes. Mrs. Fillmore added the library. Mrs. Lincoln, Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Reagan all spent a lot of money (not from the federal treasury) on the White House. The White House was rebuilt for Mrs. Monroe. Mrs. Truman was there during a large-scale renovation.
