A combination of the English and the bad weather It was a combination of forces. Primarily the English fleet harassed the Armada so succesfully that landing the Armada on British soil was prevented. The English were helped by the Dutch who blockaded the ports where Spanish auxiliary forces had boarded; this robbed the Armada of vital resources for a succesful invasion. Thirdly, the Armada then encountered gale force winds; with 'friendly' ports already behind them they had to sail on and round Scotland and Ireland to get back to Spain. In the process, many Spanish ships perished or stranded on Scottish and Irish shores where the locals happily killed off the survivors and laid hold of anything of value drifting ashore.
