Abraham Lincoln was 6 feet 4 inches tall and James Madison was 5 feet 4.

Both the Adams and Van Buren were short by today's standards. The others for the most part at least fall into the medium range of 5 feet 9 to 6 feet 2.

Why are presidents tall?

They were not all tall- Madison was about 5 feet 4 , but it is true that presidents tend to be tall. Nobody is quite sure why, but there may be something in the subconscious mind of voters that makes them prefer a taller leader, possibly something that started when leaders needed to excel in hand-to-hand combat.
