he was called the swamp fox because he was good at attacking the british and retreating quickly through swamps.

British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton had been chasing Marion through the swamps for about 7 hours covering 26 miles. He finally gave up saying "As for this damned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him." The name stuck.

Francis Marion (c. 1732 - February 27, 1795) , the 'Swamp Fox' , was an officer in the American Revolutionary War . He had learned his tactics from his time during the French and Indian war against the Cherokees who utilized these tactics which emphasized concealment , ambush and utilizing terrain to gain an advantage .

These lessons later came to be known as 'Guerrilla Warfare' to later generations .
